2017 Round Up

This year we continued to perform all over the place. St. John the Baptist in the centre of Coventry hosted UMCM's midsummer concert again, giving plenty of opportunities for pupils to shine and Charterhouse hosted a theatrical UMCM which included pupils singing and acting.  Then we had a Pupil Concert, Sing Out Loud at Earlsdon Park Village in October, where all the songs were from shows or films. This included some small scale dramatic extracts from the musicals Secret Garden and Matilda.

A group of my pupils are now studying together towards Grade 5 ABRSM. To our great relief their new ABRSM singing syllabus has refreshed the repertoire considerably. Some of those studying are doing this just for the sense of development of their musicality. Some will take the exam in the new year, but this is a project to enhance sight singing and aural skills, as much as learning the songs for the grade. I teach pupils of all ages and abilities. We are hoping to arrange some theory tuition to run alongside this project.

In the past I have worked with pupils with really outstanding voices who were just too challenged by the thought of getting better at sight singing and aural tests. So my idea is now to ensure that all pupils get tuition in these right from scratch. These aspects of the exam are often stumbling blocks and seriously impinge on results. With a Grade 8 or even diploma standard voice, you may just not make it to these exams, due to lack of confidence and skills in these two other areas. Of course there is a lot you can do to help yourself once you get the idea of what is required. ABRSM has Apps and there are aural test CDs avaiable. Joining a choir is a sure way of having to get better at sight singing!

Now we look forward to the annual UTM Christmas Party where music making, games, recitations and good company are the mainstay and onwards to more exciting music making in 2018.
